BDK Parfums Gris Charnel Extrait smells like the original Gris Charnel after midnight—darker, creamier, smokier and dressed in black. The familiar combination of spicy cardamom, black tea and fig is still there, but this time it sinks into patchouli, vanilla, sandalwood and tonka bean, creating a much richer and more seductive fragrance.

 

BDK concentrates the Extrait at 30% and describes it as a richer, more multifaceted interpretation of the original Gris Charnel. Patchouli and vanilla are major additions, giving the familiar woody signature considerably more depth and warmth.

 

 

Indonesian patchouli, Madagascar vanilla, sandalwood, American cedar and tonka bean create a thick, warm woody base. The vanilla isn't cupcake-like or sugary. It has a deeper ambered, slightly smoky quality that melts directly into the sandalwood and tonka. BDK specifically highlights the patchouli as adding depth and the vanilla as giving the trail an ambered, smoky roundness.

 

The result smells like creamy sandalwood covered in vanilla, dark patchouli and traces of black tea, with cardamom still quietly sparkling in the background.

If the original Gris Charnel feels like cashmere, Gris Charnel Extrait feels like black velvet.

 

It's warmer. Darker. More concentrated. More enveloping.

 

The progression is basically:

Spiced fig & black tea → powdery iris & smoky resins → vanilla, patchouli, sandalwood & tonka.

This isn't a loud sugar-bomb gourmand. The sweetness stays wrapped inside woods, tea, vetiver and patchouli, giving it an elegant darkness rather than a dessert-like character.

 

For anyone who loves the DNA of Gris Charnel but wants it deeper, warmer and more seductive, the Extrait takes everything recognizable about the original and turns the lights down.
